Organizational History:  Delta Kappa Gamma is an international organization for women in education that "promotes professional and personal growth . . . and excellence" for its members and for the field of education.[1]  Founded at the University of Texas, Austin, in 1929, DKG spread to Alabama ("Beta State") in 1931.[2]  Led by Laureson Forrester of the Eta Chapter at ÁùºÏ±¦µä, AL, nine women educators of Houston County, AL, founded the Alpha Rho Chapter on February 18, 1950.[3]  The chapter does not appear among those listed on the Alabama DKG website, and lack of records after 1979 indicates the chapter is not longer active.

Scope / Content Note:  The collection documents the activities of the Alpha Rho chapter as well as some of its interactions with the state and national DKG organizations.

Organization:  Organized into 5 Series

Annual Programs, 1951-1968, [2 files / 17 booklets]: documents committees, events and programs related to the Alpha Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Artifacts: 1950-1960, [2 guest books & 1 scrap book]

Office Files, 1950-1979, [1 cf]: documents the operations of the Alpha Rho Chapter, District IV, Southeastern Division of Delta Kappa Gamma at the local, state, and national/international levels.

Publications, 1949-1978, [1 cf]: bulletins, directories, handbooks, program manuals, etc. created at the state and national/international level.

Reference, ca. 1948-1955: publication not produced by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Provenance Note: The Alpha Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma stored their records at the Houston Love Memorial Library. When the Library moved to a new building, the records were sent to the Wiregrass Archives to be housed.
